Rhode Island Tautog Fishing Charters

Experience tautog fishing, targeting hard-fighting blackfish around reefs, rocks, and structure.

Get ready for your adventure on the water!

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are one of the most popular bottom fish in New England. Known for their strength and excellent table fare, these fish live around rocky bottom, reefs, ledges, wrecks, and other structure throughout Narragansett Bay and the waters surrounding Newport and Jamestown. Depending on the conditions and depth, we target tautog using both traditional bait rigs and lighter jigs. Tog are notorious bait thieves, and learning to recognize the bite and set the hook at the right time is part of the fun. Once hooked, they immediately head for the rocks, and getting a good fish away from the bottom can be a challenge. Tautog fishing can be excellent during both the spring and fall, with the fall providing some of our best opportunities for larger fish. We adjust where and how we fish based on the time of year, water temperature, tides, weather conditions, and where the fish have been holding. These trips are a great option for both experienced anglers and those who have never fished for tautog before. Captain Martin provides hands-on instruction and will help with bait presentation, jigging techniques, recognizing the bite, and knowing when to set the hook. Coastal Current Charters provides premium rods, reels, tackle, and bait for every trip. Whether you’re looking to put some fresh fish on the table, hoping to catch a trophy tog, or simply want to experience one of New England’s most enjoyable bottom fisheries, we’ll make sure you have everything you need for a great day on the water. Join Coastal Current Charters for a day of tautog fishing and experience one of the most challenging and rewarding fisheries our local waters have to offer.
